Solo ligamentos, solo filamentos,
que te has ido a volar,
desafiante,
mientras despierto, mientras creo despertar,
no me vaya yo a quedar

HUMERUS
My humerus is humid, Homer,
come and sing for it a song of humors and wetlands,
of places where to place it entirely
where to keep its bleeding integrity,
away of hobs and loafs,
of sempiternal molars and mortars afloat.
Don’t let them get confused
wrapping it among tulle and taffeta
to tell it off with a kiss
and send it running
toward remote dunghills in Tierra de Fuego.
It won’t be its legs,
thus humeri have no legs,
femora are the ones with legs, below:
chicken thighs on the run,
way beyond the cloud of smoke,
riding on contraptions
wearing ribbons instead of heads,
running along the air out of scallops in step,
tarnished upon its humerus humidity,
its bends conjured
feeling apart from all joint and conjuncture,
falling as all things fall,
to be carried among coyote snouts along the desert,
leaving a trail to be followed by children,
the trail of other children that,
having left along their gummi bears,
cracking while thinning under the sun,
carried in detriment of their melting upon
the peaks of little birds that find them quite different,
glued upon a kiss that mixes primary colors and not so much,
they pull and peck their hysteria out of bounds,
letting little black ants clean up their little caves
mimicking other dental cleansing
practiced upon the open reeking snouts
of hippos far away.
They carry along their humeri,
as coarse as trunks,
their femora behind, as well,
under all that humidity,
there seems to be no place for velocity,
and still, so restrained and thoughtful,
allow this cleansing to come through.
There, my elbows in the mirror,
tell the place from where they’ll be apart,
as if they could fly away,
mocking the hands in front of them,
pretending to be the propellers of ships raising to the sky,
leaving behind bloody festoons floating still,
not letting themselves get caught by their own weight,
floating still,
making hay while the sun shines,
smearing heaven with red lipstick.
There is no bone in the elbow, it tells me, still,
at the level of my eyes.
Only ligaments, only filaments,
imitating the great awning of a long-lost tropical forest,
I breathe, it’s through you that I breathe,
ungrateful humerus,
went flying away,
defiant,
disaffiliated of the scapula’s weight, gone away,
in the memory of that same winging mockery
of which you are only a place,
I say it among the soft mud of my muscles,
that brief garden of steppe,
hairy meadow adorning its gift wrap,
moles that follow suit to the tracing paper of the sky,
the place of transit of dead stars.
It’s carried by coyotes through the desert,
they wait for each other,
they placed it in the ground with no hands,
they delivered it, snout to snout,
it’s still the promise of a kiss,
I’m only what I feel,
all this lost humidity is not mine,
I’m only teasing you all to keep track
of each day,
the place where my humerus fit, still asleep,
while I wake up, while I think I wake up,
opening my eyes very wide, I blink,
not wanting to be left behind
in the entresol where I teach my humerus to sing.
